Bread or Circuses
This print was created for the Hamilton Ink Spot, Scary Ink Halloween poster show, “Masks: The Art of Disguise.” The show’s theme that year was in celebration of both the upcoming holiday and the 2016 presidential election. I came up with Bread or Circuses by combining the common Halloween phrase Trick or Treat with the ancient Roman phrase Bread and Circuses. In the context of politics, it refers to governing by distraction rather than honesty and excellence.
